Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell delivered a powerful, unplanned tribute to the late Mike Ditka during a routine press conference.
When a reporter asked whether Campbell had heard the news of Ditka’s passing, the coach was caught off guard and immediately opened up about a life-changing encounter with the legendary figure.
Campbell recalled meeting Ditka as a Texas A&M tight end during the 1999 NFL Draft process.
“It was one of the best times of my life and most intimidating times of my life sitting across from Mike Ditka,” Campbell said. “It was awesome, man. Him asking questions about where you grew up, how you think, how you’re wired, the game, what you see, it was awesome.”
Campbell described entering a smoke-filled room expecting a room full of coaches, only to find himself face-to-face with Ditka alone.
“Thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He’s a legend,” Campbell concluded.
The spontaneous recollection underscored the lasting impact Ditka had on generations of players who value toughness and tradition over modern spectacle.
