The New York Yankees saw their ALDS hopes end in dramatic fashion after a potential tying home run by Anthony Volpe was overturned for fan interference. The call came as the team was swept by the Rays in a 4-3 loss that left supporters stunned.
Volpe’s deep drive appeared destined for the seats when a fan reached over the wall and deflected the ball back onto the field. Umpires ruled interference and nullified the homer.
“That’s a tough one to swallow,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone after the game.
The Rays capitalized on the controversial call to secure their series sweep. New York now faces tough questions heading into the offseason.
“We battled all year and it came down to moments like that,” Volpe said after the loss.
