Another historic California location is being stripped of its freedom by government overreach. The San Gregorio Ranch State Beach, considered one of the first nude beaches in the state, is being added to the California State Parks system — and forced to cover up in the process.

The nonprofit land trust Peninsula Open Space Trust purchased the land last spring and plans to donate it to the state park system later this year. The beach will open on July 29, and clothing will now be required.

Day-to-day operations will be managed by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks. Bonny Hawley, the Executive Director of the organization, confirmed that nudity isn’t allowed at state parks — no exceptions.

She added that the parks system will be educating the public about the beach no longer being a nude one. A sad day for those who’ve enjoyed decades of tradition and personal freedom at this iconic spot.

“I’m not happy about it,” Bob Morton told the Los Angeles Times.

He’s been to the beach for years and is baffled by the state’s heavy-handed approach.

“It seems counterintuitive,” he added. “You go there to be one with nature.”

For decades, beachgoers chose this location precisely because it offered freedom from the usual constraints. Now California’s bureaucracy has decided that personal choice takes a backseat to top-down control.

As if the clothing mandate weren’t restrictive enough, the new rules also ban dogs from the stretch of beach. What was once a place of freedom and relaxation is being transformed into just another regulated, sanitized government property.

Where’s the sense of adventure and individual liberty that once defined California? It’s being smothered by the same government overreach that has driven millions out of the state in recent years.

Americans deserve better.
