The United States Coast Guard on Tuesday confirmed that only one boater, a 15-year-old teenager, was rescued alive after three individuals went missing off the coast of Alaska earlier this week. The two other mariners were found dead.

Rescue personnel discovered the teenager “clinging to the capsized vessel” Monday in remote waters near St. Lawrence Island. Officials said crews found him in the midst of a medical emergency, suffering from hypothermia.

“The survivor was rescued from the overturned skiff experiencing symptoms of hypothermia,” officials said.

The two other mariners were found dead after the 18-foot fishing vessel they were aboard overturned approximately 4 miles east of St. Lawrence Island. The capsized boat had been reported overdue Sunday evening, sparking an immediate response from authorities.

The Coast Guard said crews initiated a search mission early Monday after Alaska State Troopers notified them of an overdue boat Sunday evening. The vessel had been expected to return Sunday at 3 a.m. but never made it back to shore.

Officials said crews were unable to launch a rescue mission until Monday morning due to severe weather conditions and poor visibility. The delay underscores the harsh realities of operating in Alaska’s unforgiving maritime environment.

After launching an aircrew Monday morning, personnel spotted the teenage survivor clinging to the overturned vessel. They immediately deployed a raft with survival equipment to stabilize his condition.

Officials said a good Samaritan vessel operating in the area also stepped in to assist. The civilian boat rescued the 15-year-old survivor and helped recover the bodies of the two deceased mariners from the frigid water.

The two mariners and the teen survivor were then brought to Nome, Alaska, where medical personnel were standing by. The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending family notification.

The incident highlights the dangerous conditions that fishermen and recreational boaters face in Alaska’s remote waters. Weather can change rapidly in the region, creating life-threatening situations even for experienced mariners.
