Lost Aircraft’s Final Resting Place Finally Revealed After Decades-Long Mystery

Searchers have discovered the wreckage of a Pan Am flight that ditched in the ocean off Puerto Rico in 1952, a catastrophic crash that killed 52 people and fundamentally changed commercial aviation safety standards. The find comes after decades of mystery surrounding the aircraft’s final location.
Using an autonomous underwater vehicle equipped with high-resolution sonar, investigators located the DC-4 fuselage and separated tail section in nearly 2,000 feet of water. The Clipper Endeavor had made a hard landing in the ocean after losing engine power shortly after departure from San Juan, Puerto Rico, en route to New York City.
The 17 passengers and crew who survived told investigators a harrowing story. Everyone initially survived the landing, but chaos erupted as passengers desperately struggled to locate life vests and the crew fought to pull out life rafts. The plane sank within minutes, turning survivable circumstances into a deadly disaster.
The Civil Aeronautics Board attributed the accident to inadequate maintenance that contributed to the engine failure and to the captain’s handling of the aircraft after power was lost. This determination underscored serious deficiencies in airline operational standards at the time.
The panic from occupants struggling to grab flotation devices helped spur critical aviation-safety reforms. These included mandatory preflight passenger briefings and significant improvements involving flotation equipment—protections American travelers still depend on today.
The crash first drew the attention of Air/Sea Heritage Foundation President Russ Matthews in 2019 when he heard about a luggage tag from the flight washing ashore in Florida. This discovery sparked his determination to solve the mystery.
Matthews spent years combing through Pan Am and Coast Guard archives in search of clues about the plane’s wreckage location. Reports from the Civil Aeronautics Board, which preceded the Federal Aviation Administration, also aided the search.
The breakthrough came from records in Puerto Rico from a hearing held on the crash. A map estimating the crash site, created by Air Force pilots who witnessed the accident during a training flight, proved instrumental to finally locating the wreckage.
Bad weather disrupted a previous attempt two years ago to find the wreckage with a towed sonar array. Matthews and his volunteers wanted a second attempt to locate it before next year’s 75th anniversary of the crash, this time using an advanced drone originally created for military uses such as finding undersea mines.
Tony Romeo, the CEO of the undersea exploration firm Deep Sea Vision, had been speaking to Matthews about helping to find the aircraft. In April, one of the company’s ships passed Puerto Rico between two other jobs while carrying an advanced underwater drone with the right sensors.
“There we were, and everything kind of came together at the moment: good weather, the right team, and the right equipment and ship. So we took a shot at it,” said Romeo, whose father was a mechanic and pilot for Pan Am.
Deep Sea Vision previously led an unsuccessful six-month mission in search of Amelia Earhart’s plane. This discovery marks a significant success for the team.
All the research Matthews’ group had conducted, along with weather data from the time of the crash, was synthesized to develop a map of the most likely location. The search area covered 10 square nautical miles. The drone located the wreckage on its first pass over that area, though searchers remained unaware until it returned to the surface with images.
