Four American tourists were among six people killed when a massive explosion leveled a residential building near Athens’ famed Acropolis. Two couples staying in the historic Plaka district perished in the blast.

The victims had been scheduled to depart Athens airport at 3 p.m. on Friday but never arrived. Their belongings and documents confirmed their U.S. citizenship.

U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle issued a statement mourning the loss. “I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of four American citizens in yesterday’s explosion in central Athens,” she wrote on X.

Emergency crews recovered six bodies from the rubble Saturday morning. Firefighters had been searching for an elderly couple and the four American tourists who were staying in the two-story structure.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas stated that the blast was likely caused by a major gas leak. Investigators are examining reports of a gas smell in the area prior to the explosion.

The powerful blast destroyed the building and damaged nearby homes, shops and vehicles. Rubble and shattered glass scattered up to three blocks away.

Video from the scene showed debris strewn across the street and parked cars crushed beneath falling rubble. The building was reduced to twisted metal, broken tiles and concrete.

Thirty firefighters and three rescue dogs combed through the wreckage using cameras and sensors. Two women were injured in an adjacent building.

A nearby church also suffered damage from the explosion. Sunday services will be held outdoors while repairs are made.
