Thieves hoping for a high-tech payday struck a facility in Newark, California last week, only to discover their haul was nothing more than 40,000 pounds of sand.

The incident highlights the growing problem of cargo theft in states that have weakened penalties for property crimes.

Two trailers bearing Nvidia and autonomous trucking company PlusAI logos were stolen from outside the companies’ Newark facility.

“The thieves stole two trailers bearing Nvidia and autonomous trucking company PlusAI logos outside the companies’ Newark, California, facility,” according to reports.

The trailers contained no valuable graphics processing units despite the prominent tech branding.

Instead, the thieves found themselves stuck with 40,000 pounds of ordinary sand that had been loaded for weight distribution during transport.

“Their haul turned out to be 40,000 pounds of sand.”

The failed heist comes as California continues to deal with the consequences of policies that have made property crime more attractive to criminals.
