Trump Administration Threatens California Funding Over Anti-Drilling Bias
Liberty Check
- Federal regulators are holding California accountable for weaponizing coastal rules against energy production and innovation.
- Trump-era oversight is restoring constitutional balance by conditioning federal dollars on fair, unbiased enforcement.
- California’s coastal program faces a reckoning for putting radical green politics ahead of jobs and national energy security.
A draft federal review accuses California coastal regulators of political bias against offshore drilling and SpaceX, and suspends funding for the state’s coastal program until it makes more than a dozen changes.
The move comes as part of a broader push by the Trump administration to rein in state agencies that have weaponized environmental rules to block domestic energy development. California officials have long opposed new offshore leases and repeatedly delayed permits for commercial space operations at Vandenberg Space Force Base.
The federal review found the state’s coastal commission applied different standards to projects based on political alignment rather than consistent policy. Regulators blocked multiple drilling proposals while fast-tracking others that aligned with progressive priorities.
Trump administration officials warned that continued opposition to lawful energy projects could cost the state millions in coastal management grants. The funding suspension is designed to force compliance with federal standards that treat all applicants equally.
“The federal government will not subsidize states that discriminate against lawful economic activity based on political ideology,” a senior Interior Department official stated.
California’s coastal program receives roughly $3 million annually in federal support. Losing that money would force the state to either reform its regulatory approach or absorb the full cost of its own bureaucracy.
Energy analysts say the dispute highlights a growing conflict between state-level climate activism and federal authority over offshore resources. The Trump administration has made clear it will not allow coastal states to veto national energy policy through regulatory backdoors.
