Pope Leo XIV arrived in France on Friday for a four-day visit that marks his fifth Apostolic Journey as Pontiff. The trip represents the first formal papal visit since 2008.

French bishops have chosen the theme “That the world may have life” for the visit. The announcement comes amid a surge in adult baptisms, with over 21,000 French adults joining the Church this year alone.

“Pope Leo’s visit to France has sparked a real tidal wave” of interest, retired French Bishop Marc Stenger told Reuters.

“French Catholics are… saying loudly that they need the Church to find their way in these uncertain moments in world history.”

The visit follows years of damaging clergy abuse scandals that have severely wounded the Church’s credibility in France. Church leaders have acknowledged the deep wounds inflicted on victims and the institution.

In an unusual move, Pope Leo will meet privately in Lourdes with seven abuse victims as part of a healing message. The Vatican frames the trip as uniting faith and public engagement with listening and bridge-building at its core.

After meeting French President Emmanuel Macron at Élysée Palace, Pope Leo is scheduled to deliver 15 speeches covering spiritual and societal themes. His topics include immigration, care for the sick and unborn, and human dignity in the AI era.

Organizers for Saturday’s Mass at Place de la Concorde are extending security perimeters to accommodate up to one million attendees. The Popemobile route will stretch beyond the Champs-Élysées length.

Pope Leo will speak at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes on Sunday, a site where Pope John Paul II delivered a forceful condemnation of abortion and euthanasia during his final foreign trip in 2004.

The visit occurs against the backdrop of France’s recent legislation allowing lethal medication for incurable illnesses and the constitutional enshrinement of abortion as a right. These policies directly contradict traditional Catholic doctrine on life issues.

At UNESCO headquarters on Friday, Pope Leo is expected to reiterate his call for an AI slowdown and speak about human existence and what makes humans truly human.

His position on AI regulation continues to contrast with President Trump’s approach, which emphasizes American innovation and competition with China rather than international restrictions.

Following the UNESCO speech, Pope Leo will hold a prayer service at the restored Notre-Dame Cathedral, marking the first papal visit since the 2019 fire that nearly destroyed the landmark.

The trip concludes Monday with a visit to Metz, birthplace of European Union founding father Robert Schuman. French Ambassador Charles Personnaz indicated that Macron has invited all 27 EU leaders to attend.
