The reigning national champion Indiana Hoosiers faced their toughest challenge of the season Friday night. Despite entering as three-touchdown favorites, they needed every bit of their championship experience to hold off the Northwestern Wildcats.

The Hoosiers escaped with a 29-23 victory at Memorial Stadium. What began as another slow start for Indiana turned into a battle that tested their resolve until the final whistle.

Head coach Curt Cignetti had already answered questions about his team’s sluggish openings against weaker opponents. Friday’s matchup against Northwestern brought those concerns into sharper focus as the Big Ten schedule kicked off.

The Hoosiers opened with a long drive that consumed nearly half the first quarter. Yet the offense stalled again when Northwestern’s defense made a stand and forced a turnover in the end zone for a safety.

Running back Turbo Richard suffered a late hit that sent him to the locker room. The absence forced Lee Beebe Jr. into a larger role, and he delivered with 203 rushing yards.

Northwestern finally reached the end zone in the third quarter. Quarterback Aidan Chiles led the drive despite an apparent finger injury, ending Indiana’s shutout streak.

The Wildcats tied the game early in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass to Griffin Wilde. Coach David Braun’s failed two-point attempts kept Indiana ahead.

Beebe’s 39-yard run set up the go-ahead touchdown for the Hoosiers. Penalties mounted for Indiana, but they answered each Northwestern threat with timely scores.

Josh Hoover sealed the win with a quarterback keeper that fooled the defense. Indiana recovered the onside kick attempt to close out the victory.

The slow-start issue remains a concern heading into the next stretch. Yet Beebe’s breakout performance offers optimism for the weeks ahead.

The Hoosiers host Rutgers next before facing Nebraska and then Ohio State on October 17.
