Senate Blocks Tougher Stock Trading Ban Critics Demand
Liberty Check
- Stock trading by lawmakers creates dangerous conflicts of interest
- Democrats blocked stronger reforms that would have protected taxpayers
- Current weak rules leave Americans vulnerable to insider advantages
The Senate fell short of the votes needed to pass a stricter ban on congressional stock trading. Democrats rejected the measure despite public pressure for accountability.
The Stop Insider Trading Act would have stopped members of Congress, their spouses, and children from buying new individual stocks. It also required public notice before any sales and banned purchases tied to committee work.
Critics argue the bill did not go far enough to restore trust in government.
“This proposal was a half-measure at best,” one opponent said.
Supporters say the failure proves Washington elites protect their own financial interests above the public good.
“Americans deserve better.”
