Archaeologists Probe Deep Beneath Biblical Boat Formation in Turkey

  • American researchers are leading the charge to uncover potential evidence of one of the Bible’s most famous stories.
  • The project challenges decades of dismissive claims from secular academics who called the formation a natural rock.
  • Deeper testing could validate longstanding traditional beliefs about Scripture and history.

American-led researchers have wrapped up their first full season of deep drilling beneath a boat-shaped formation in eastern Turkey long believed by many to be the remains of Noah’s Ark.

The team collected more than 300 soil samples and reached depths of over 60 feet, sending the material for laboratory analysis that could reveal signs of ancient man-made activity.

“When we drilled into the formation this year for the first time, we did not encounter any solid block of rock, of limestone, [or] of any type of a rock,” said Noah’s Ark Research Project vice president Andrew Jones.

Earlier surface sampling had already shown striking differences between soil inside and outside the formation, with three times more organic matter and 38 percent more potassium detected within the site.

Those results prompted the team to drill deeper this season to test whether the anomalies extend underground.

“Near [the] surface, we’re seeing a difference in the soil,” Jones said. “Let’s go deeper this year and see what we can find.”

The researchers are now testing whether decayed wood or other evidence of human construction lies beneath the formation, directly challenging previous geological dismissals.

“We’re still studying our results, but we believe that this should give [skeptics] pause when they say this is a rock formation,” Jones said.

Ancient pottery fragments found nearby have added fuel to the debate, though the artifacts were discovered beside rather than within the formation itself.

Two ancient settlements sit close to the site, raising questions about whether early inhabitants may have lived beside what many faithful believe is the Ark.

“If this is Noah’s Ark, we have people living right beside it early on,” Jones noted.

Jones, who identifies as a Christian, emphasized that the team still has extensive lab work ahead before any firm conclusions can be drawn.

“We still have the lab work to do,” he said. “And I hope everyone can follow along and see what we find.”
