Guardians Pitchers Face Federal Charges in MLB Betting Scam

Liberty Check

Two Cleveland Guardians pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, are now at the center of a high-profile federal indictment alleging their involvement in a Major League Baseball gambling scheme.

The indictment accuses them of fraud, conspiracy, and bribery connected to rigging on-field performances in exchange for kickbacks from bets.

  • Prosecutors allege Clase and Ortiz fixed pitches based on coordinated wagers with corrupt bettors.
  • The Department of Justice claims Ortiz and Clase each accepted $5,000 bribes for manipulating pitches in games.
  • The case highlights deep concerns over integrity within professional sports and the stewardship of American traditions.

“Professional athletes … hold a position of trust — not only with their teammates and their professional leagues, but with fans who believe in fair play,” said U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. “As alleged, the defendants sold that trust to gamblers by fixing pitches.”

Ortiz’s attorney maintains his client’s innocence, stressing, “There is no credible evidence Luis knowingly did anything other than try to win games, with every pitch and in every inning.”

This case stands as a stark reminder: even icons of America’s pastime are not above the law. Limited government and accountability are essential if we’re to preserve trust in our institutions and defend the values that inspire generations.

The Constitution must be defended.
