Gun Owners Challenge Federal Registry After Tax Repeal
Liberty Check
Second Amendment advocates have launched a major lawsuit contesting federal control over silencers and short-barreled firearms. The move follows the passing of the Big Beautiful Bill, which ends the $200 tax previously imposed under the National Firearms Act.
Pro-gun groups argue that removing this tax also erases the principal justification for federal registration and ongoing regulation.
- The lawsuit targets the ATF’s authority to track and control suppressors and short-barreled weapons after the tax repeal.
- Groups involved include Silencer Shop Foundation and Gun Owners of America.
- They argue the government’s registry lacks legal grounds without financial enforcement.
Dave Matheny, CEO of Silencer Shop, stated,
“This lawsuit isn’t about picking a fight — it’s about ending one that started in 1934. For nearly a century, Americans have been told they need to beg for permission to protect their own hearing.”
He continued,
“That’s not safety. That’s government inertia. We’re fighting to restore the kind of common sense our grandparents took for granted — where you could enjoy your rights without a calendar and a checkbook standing in the way.”
Erich Pratt, Senior Vice President of Gun Owners of America, emphasized,
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to dismantle one of the most abusive federal gun control laws on the books. With the tax struck down by Congress, the rest of the NFA is standing on air.”
He added,
“We’re ready to take this fight to the courts and finally end the federal registry once and for all.”
This legal challenge represents a direct attempt to restore gun owners’ rights and halt regulatory overreach. Constitutional conservatives are being called to stay alert and make their voices heard in defense of the Second Amendment.
It’s time to push back.
