  • A 25-year-old suspect now faces serious felony charges after a chaotic morning that could have ended in tragedy

A suspected impaired driver led San Diego police on a wild chase Sunday morning that ended with a dramatic arrest on a crowded California beach, where shocked beachgoers witnessed officers swarm the suspect’s vehicle.

The dangerous pursuit began just before 7:30 a.m. when the San Diego Police Department received multiple reports of a man driving a tan Nissan Frontier recklessly through the Pacific Beach neighborhood. Witnesses described the driver doing donuts in parking lots, nearly hitting other vehicles, and possibly striking curbs and a retaining wall.

Officers arrived within minutes and spotted the truck heading west toward the ocean. When an officer attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled, sparking the first of what would become multiple pursuits.

Police made the difficult decision to terminate that first chase due to the driver’s “increasing wanton disregard to public safety.” Officers later located the truck again, but the suspect refused to yield a second time, forcing another pursuit that was also called off for safety reasons.

By this point, the Nissan was wanted in connection with felony evading, and officers saturated the area searching for the vehicle. When they spotted it again driving slowly, police held off on another attempted stop until the department’s ABLE helicopter could get overhead to track the suspect from the air.

The helicopter followed as the Nissan drove directly onto the beach and headed toward the water. Video from the scene shows stunned beachgoers watching as officers converge on the pickup truck on the sand.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Griffin Charles Foy, was seen outside the truck with his hands raised as officers moved in. A police K-9 was at the scene but was not deployed during the arrest.

Police conducted what they described as a high-risk vehicle stop because of the nature of the alleged violations and Foy’s “disregard to public safety.” Foy was taken into custody without further incident.

He was booked into San Diego Central Jail on charges of felony evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety, obstructing or resisting a peace officer, and driving under the influence of drugs.

Despite the chaotic pursuit that spanned multiple terminations and locations, police confirmed no one was injured. The incident highlights the constant danger law enforcement officers face when dealing with suspects who show complete disregard for public safety.

Americans deserve better.
