Campbell’s CEO Mick Beekhuizen highlighted this shift during the company’s third-quarter earnings call, noting that consumer sentiment has softened, prompting shoppers to be more deliberate with their food spending.

This trend has resulted in the highest levels of home-cooked meals since the early days of 2020, as families prioritize stretching their food budgets. Campbell’s has seen a boost in its meals and beverages business, particularly with its condensed cooking soups, broths, and Italian sauces, which are favored for their budget-friendly versatility.

However, the snacking category hasn’t fared as well, as consumers are becoming more selective with discretionary purchases. This shift comes amid a significant rise in the all-food consumer price index, which has surged by 23.6% from 2020 to 2024, outpacing the overall index growth of 21.2%.

While the pace of food price increases has slowed in recent years, thanks to easing wholesale prices and other inflationary factors, there are concerns that tariffs, particularly those implemented during President Donald Trump’s administration, could drive food costs up once more. According to a McKinsey survey, tariffs have become the second biggest concern for consumers, right after inflation, with nearly 50% citing rising prices as their top worry.

Despite ongoing trade negotiations, the market remains volatile and uncertain, pushing many Americans to explore various financial strategies to safeguard their wallets. Even if the impact of tariffs hasn’t fully materialized on store shelves, consumers are preparing for potential changes.
