California’s Governor Gavin Newsom is at it again, requesting an eye-popping $2.8 billion loan to plug a gaping hole in the state’s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal. This comes hot on the heels of a previous $3.4 billion loan request, all while California’s budget spirals out of control, largely thanks to policies covering illegal immigrants.

Governor Newsom, alongside Democratic leaders, claims they’re committed to making “tough fiscal choices” to rein in spending. Yet, the numbers tell a different story. The additional billions are needed just to keep the program running through June, raising questions about the sustainability of such spending.

Newsom’s administration is quick to deflect blame, pointing to increased enrollment and rising pharmaceutical costs as the culprits. They even cite other states like Pennsylvania and Indiana facing similar issues. But let’s be clear: California’s unique policies, particularly its decision to expand Medi-Cal to cover all low-income adults regardless of immigration status, are a significant factor.

Republican voices in the state legislature have long warned against this reckless spending. California Senate Republican Minority Leader Brian Jones didn’t mince words, highlighting the staggering $6.2 billion over budget. “Californians should not be forced to shoulder the burden of radical Democrats’ reckless financial mismanagement,” Jones stated, pointing out that even former Governor Jerry Brown saw the fiscal irresponsibility of such expansions.

Under Newsom’s leadership, California became the first state to offer Medi-Cal to all low-income adults, including approximately 1.6 million illegal immigrants. This move, while hailed by some as progressive, has left legal residents facing financial strain and reduced access to healthcare.

The state’s initial cost estimate for this ambitious program was just under $6 billion for the fiscal year 2024 to 2025. Yet, just a year in, those costs have ballooned, leaving taxpayers on the hook. Meanwhile, House Republicans are pushing back, advancing a proposal to cut $880 billion from Medicaid and similar programs over the next decade.

Newsom’s latest budget proposal forecasts $8.4 billion to cover illegal immigrants in Medi-Cal for 2024-2025, with another $7.4 billion the following year. During a legislative hearing, Michelle Bass, director of the Department of Health Care Services, admitted that the state grossly underestimated the number of illegal immigrant enrollees.

It’s high time for accountability. Californians deserve answers and a plan to address this financial debacle. Newsom’s policies have led to a fiscal nightmare, and it’s the hardworking citizens who are left to pick up the tab.
