Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed fatalities and injuries after a serious incident triggered a major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta.
The massive Army training installation is one of the country’s busiest military bases. McGuinty refused to release casualty numbers, leaving families in the dark.
“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” McGuinty told reporters.
The fire was still burning into Saturday evening. McGuinty added, “I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory.”
The municipality of Wainwright reported the blaze had spread beyond the base perimeter into surrounding areas.
Local officials stated no evacuation orders were issued despite the danger.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the incident on X, writing, “A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta.”
“Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected,” Carney continued.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the event as a “significant and tragic fire” impacting military personnel.
Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and local emergency teams responded to the scene.
“The Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, partners across the federal government, including public safety, are working with the government of Alberta and municipal governments to mobilize all necessary support,” McGuinty said.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright sits roughly 130 miles east of Edmonton.
The base housed about 1,310 military and civilian personnel as of 2021. The nearby town of Wainwright has roughly 6,600 residents.
The cause of the incident remains unknown.
