A leading pro-Second Amendment organization has just fired the opening shot in what could become one of the most consequential gun rights battles in decades. The Firearms Policy Coalition filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, urging the justices to strike down state-level bans on semi-automatic firearms that millions of Americans rely on for self-defense and sport.

The brief comes as the high court considers whether to hear a challenge to Maryland’s ban on so-called “assault weapons.” Progressive lawmakers in blue states have increasingly targeted common semi-automatic rifles, demonizing them despite their widespread lawful use. The case could determine whether Americans retain their constitutional right to own the firearms of their choice—or whether activist judges will rubber-stamp sweeping gun grabs.

“Modern semi-automatic rifles are the overwhelming choice of Americans for lawful purposes including self-defense, hunting, and recreational shooting,” the Firearms Policy Coalition argued in its filing.

The organization pointed out that these firearms are not the outliers the left portrays them to be. They are standard equipment for responsible gun owners across the country. Yet Maryland and other Democrat-controlled states have enacted blanket bans that treat law-abiding citizens like criminals.

This legal fight arrives on the heels of the Supreme Court’s landmark 2022 decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, which reaffirmed that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to bear arms in common use. That ruling should have ended the debate. Instead, liberal states have doubled down on restrictions, forcing gun rights advocates back to court.

The Maryland ban prohibits the sale and possession of dozens of popular semi-automatic rifles and magazines holding more than ten rounds. Supporters claim the law enhances public safety. But the Firearms Policy Coalition counters that it disarms peaceful Americans while doing nothing to stop criminals who ignore gun laws in the first place.

“These bans do not make communities safer,” the brief states. “They only infringe on the rights of millions of law-abiding citizens.”

The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether it will take up the case. But if the justices agree to hear it, the ruling could have nationwide implications. A decision striking down Maryland’s ban would likely invalidate similar laws in California, New York, Connecticut, and other blue states that have chipped away at gun rights under the guise of public safety.

Conservative legal scholars argue that the case is a direct test of whether the Constitution still means what it says. The Second Amendment does not grant permission to own only certain firearms approved by politicians. It protects the right to keep and bear arms—period.

Gun control advocates, meanwhile, are expected to flood the court with their own briefs, claiming that banning entire categories of firearms is a reasonable regulation. They will likely cite debunked statistics and emotional appeals rather than constitutional text. But the Firearms Policy Coalition is betting that the Supreme Court will stick to the law as written.

The stakes could not be higher. If the court declines to hear the case or sides with Maryland, it would green-light a wave of new restrictions in states eager to gut the Second Amendment. If the court strikes down the ban, it would send a clear message that Americans’ gun rights cannot be legislated away by hostile state governments.
