  • Legal immigration and naturalization remain the proper path for those seeking American citizenship.

Joni Mitchell, the legendary singer-songwriter, has officially become an American citizen at age 82, completing a process that began more than six decades ago.

The Canadian-born artist shared news of her naturalization on Instagram, posting photos and video from the ceremony that showed her holding an American flag.

“A journey that began 62 years ago,” Mitchell wrote in her post.

Mitchell appeared at the ceremony wearing a red and navy floral cardigan with an American flag pin, paired with a red beret and a red beaded necklace.

The audience cheered when her name was called during the proceedings, reflecting the formal recognition of her completed naturalization.

Mitchell will maintain her Canadian citizenship as well, consistent with the dual-citizenship policies of both nations.

Born Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Mitchell moved to the United States in 1965 after marrying American folk singer Chuck Mitchell.

She built her acclaimed career across multiple states, including New York and California, while earning 11 Grammy Awards and inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

“Everybody get out and vote. This is an important one. I wish I could vote — I’m Canadian. I’m one of those lousy immigrants,” Mitchell said at a 2024 performance.

At Canada’s Juno Awards in March, Mitchell praised Canadian leadership and contrasted her experience living in the United States.

When asked about Mitchell’s comments, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle responded, “Who the hell is Joni Mitchell?”

Mitchell has also worn an “ICE OUT” pin at public events, signaling her opposition to current immigration enforcement policies.

Americans deserve better.
