The Trump administration announced Tuesday it will pursue aggressive enforcement action against Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools, including potential loss of federal funding, over policies that deliberately conceal information about transgender students from their parents.

The Education Department determined that the district’s policy of hiding a student’s transgender status from parents constitutes a clear violation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. The agency is now coordinating with the Justice Department to take “appropriate enforcement measures,” which could include judicial proceedings and the withholding of federal dollars.

“Kansas City Kansas Public Schools’ sustained efforts to sidestep FERPA, conceal its true policies, and obstruct parents’ lawful access to their children’s education records represents a serious and deliberate breach of federal law,” said Frank Miller, Director of the Student Privacy Policy Office at the Education Department.

“A strong and coordinated enforcement partnership between the Department of Education and the Department of Justice will ensure districts are held accountable and fully honor parents’ rights,” he added.

According to federal authorities, the district’s policy explicitly states that school personnel “should not disclose information that may reveal a student’s transgender status or gender nonconforming presentation to others, including parents.” This represents a deliberate effort to cut parents out of critical decisions affecting their own children.

The Education Department offered the district a proposed Resolution Agreement that outlined specific remedial actions. Despite this opportunity to correct course, district officials have chosen to continue ignoring federal parental rights law.

This enforcement action is part of a broader Trump administration initiative to restore parental rights and combat radical gender ideology in schools. The administration has threatened to pull federal funding from several other districts across the country over similar transgender policies that sideline parents.

Earlier this year, the Education Department identified policies in four Kansas school districts, including Kansas City, as violating federal law. The move signals that the administration is serious about following through on its promises to protect parental rights and children.
