The Tampa Bay Rays are headed to the World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians in Game 6 of the ALCS. They won 7-3 to claim the American League pennant and will now face the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Rays got on the board early in the bottom of the second inning when Richie Palacios delivered a clutch two-out double to give Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead. The home crowd at Tropicana Field was electric and the momentum stayed with the Rays all night.
Junior Caminero delivered the defining blow in the bottom of the seventh. With the score 3-1, the Rays star crushed an inside pitch that smacked off the foul pole for a two-run homer that made it 5-1. Caminero stopped before first base, screaming in elation as teammates celebrated and the sold-out crowd erupted in rapture.
“Caminero turned on an inside pitch and was willing the ball to stay fair, as it smacked off the foul pole and the celebration ensued. Caminero stopped before hitting first base, screaming in elation with the crowd and his nearby teammates in the dugout as he understood making it a 5-1 game in the bottom of the seventh inning was a back-breaker for the Guardians.”
Cleveland tried to rally in the eighth inning, scoring twice to close the gap to 5-3. But the Rays answered immediately when Yandy Diaz crushed a 416-foot home run over the left field wall, restoring the four-run lead.
Bryan Baker, the Rays’ lockdown closer, came on in the ninth to finish the job. He retired Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez on ground balls to first before Chase DeLauter popped out foul to seal Tampa Bay’s ticket to the Fall Classic.
This marks the Rays’ first World Series appearance since the shortened 2020 season. The Brewers, who swept the Dodgers in the NLCS, are making their first appearance in 44 years. One franchise will win its first-ever championship when the two teams meet.
