Should English Be The Official Language Of The United States?

Here’s the Scoop

For years, conservatives have voiced concerns over the increasing multilingualism of America.

As the nation built on core values, traditions, and unity, the idea that English serves as a unifying thread has become a salient point for many.

Establishing English as the official language would simplify governmental proceedings and foster a sense of national identity.

Opponents argue that such a move is exclusionary, but is it not essential to have a lingua franca to streamline communication in our official affairs?

Establishing English as official language will result in a stronger, smarter more secure America. We have the votes. Needs to be mandated via constitutional amendment. http://www.eisforenglish.com

you come here to join in in this great country learn the language or you won’t fit in. otherwise you are here just to mooch off of the system and the Tax Payer. when you get a job you must learn tat job if you don’t you will have to find a new Job. The same with a new country learn the language or find a NEW place to live.

Americans should learn to speak more than one language – like the rest of the world. We aren’t as exceptional as we think.

It would be nice to learn different languages. In this country we have choices. We shouldn’t have to listen to a slew of options to hear OUR language. Welcome to America. Assimilate or don’t come here. It’s a common sense courtesy and a show of support for a place where everything is better, and the main reason all who come here seek.

Learning to speak English should be one of the requirements for naturalization.

My greatgrand parents had to learn english when they came here. Not only that but they had to get a job and find someplace to live. No body gave them money, a place to live or even welcomed them. Wake up America

My father was an immigrant back in 1912. He recd no free ride or protected status as an immigrant. He learced English on his own and had to PAY to go to English classes. He recd NO WELFARE FOR HIM BUT MAYBE A SOUP LINE SOMETIMES. He relied on himself and coming from behind the IRON CURTAIN he was unable to see his family for for 50 yrs as the US would not grant them visas. So much for keeping families togETHER!!!!! He married, opened his own business and raised seven children ALL without the fleecing of American taxpayers of which he became one. We were a bilingual household!!!! But we ALL spoke English because it was the language of the land. We have gone overboard with this notion that America has to INCLUDE EVERYONE WHEN THEY REFUSE TO INCLUDE AMERICA!!!! It is time that AMERICA stop defeating itself and thinkingthat it has to accommodate EVERYONE. We are being made fools of and it is destroying us. And, to Denise no one is forcing AMericans only speak English but when an immigrant come to America and after being here for 50yrs and not learned to speak English or REFUSE to speak English which has now become the rule and not the exception the problem will only become worse!!!! A country can only be as great as the people it serves and unfortunately the future looks grim under our current immigration policies or lack thereof.

We were taught in History class back in the ’70s that the Continental Congress DID vote on an “official language” for the new United States of America, with English narrowly defeating German as the winner.
